All of you that own a cat have experienced unpleasant cat urine odor. Especially if your cat urinated on a carpet where smell stays for ever. If you don’t spot the urine stains in time then cat urine odor removal gets harder. The older the stains the harder is to remove them.

How To Deal With Cat Urine Smell

Most cats will not urinate on the furniture but there are several factors that can lead a cat do that and they include, failing to clean litter in a while, an underlying medical condition, stress and territorial issues. When a cat urinates on furniture, one might not notice immediately but after a while, the urine which mainly contains urea starts to decompose and rot thereby producing an unpleasant smell.

As earlier stated, removing the odor of cat urine can be easily done using products that are easily found around the home and they include baking soda, washing detergent, hydrogen peroxide and white vinegar. If a cat has just urinated on the furniture, rug or carpet and one happens to notice it just in time, the first step would be to try and absorb as much urine using cloth or just paper towels. They should then press the towels or treads on them to absorb the urine. This process should be repeated until no more urine can be absorbed. This prevents having to deal with the odor later.

However, if a cat had urinated on the furniture or rugs and it had gone unnoticed until the smell became apparent, the first thing to do to get rid of cat urine smell quickly is to try and trace exactly where the urine is. This can be done using a backlight in a darkened room. The backlight not only detects urine but other household stains as well. The next step is to make a mixture of water and white vinegar in equal proportions. This mixture is then used to wet the area with the cat urine smell. Use generously to ensure that it penetrates deep into the fibers. The vinegar’s acidity will help to neutralize the urine’s ammonia.

The area should now be allowed to dry almost completely and this process can be aided by the use of towels or a vacuum extractor that is especially used to remove moisture. The next step is to apply a baking powder generously on the affected area and then drizzle a mixture of a teaspoon of washing detergent and a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide. This is then worked in to the furniture or carpet using the fingers of a gloved hand or a scrubbing brush. It is then allowed to dry and then vacuuming is done on the affected area.

While the vinegar is used to neutralize ammonia, hydrogen peroxide kills the bacteria that cause the cat urine smell with its powerful oxidizers. Baking powder also assists in removing the odor due to its deodorizing capabilities. It is advisable to use baking powder during the general cleaning of furniture and carpets to remove unidentified smells. Ammonia or products made of ammonia should not be used because urine contains ammonia and a cat can identify this smell and will therefore, keep urinating on the same spot. This means that one should always read the ingredients on their household products.
