Every cat owner knows about cat urine smell. It is nothing worse then can urine odor and on top of that it is really difficult to get rid of.

Cat Urine Removal Recipe

There are many different ways to go about cat urine odor removal but many of the methods out there can actually make matters worse.

Although going out and buying a bottle of Nature’s Miracle has been proven to eliminate cat urine odor, there are other completely free recipes that do a remarkable job of removing the cat urine smell.

This will accomplish more than just getting the smell out of your home. It will also go a long way towards stopping your cat peeing outside the litterbox.

The recipe that I have found to be most effective for cat urine removal contains the following:

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of liquid soap

Be careful when mixing this recipe not to stir too vigorously and do not store it in a closed container.

The best option is to keep your cat urine removal mixture in a spray bottle. You want to be sure to test any areas for color-fastness before applying also. The hydrogen peroxide can have a lightening effect on dark fabrics for example.

To apply the cat urine removal mixture, you need to completely saturate the offending area. The use of a blacklight can help to identify exactly where you should be spraying.

It is of vital importance that you clean the area as soon as possible before the cat pee has had a chance to crystallize into the fabric.

Eliminate Cat Urine Odor

You are probably looking for the ultimate cat urine odor removal spray. Well even some of the best cleaning products can’t get rid of cat urine smell. Especially if a cat urinated on a wool carpet.

Eliminate Cat Urine Odor

I have not yet found a deodorizing agent that will eliminate feline urine. The good news is that I have found an electronic device that absolutely destroys urine odor. Let me say, right up front, we love cats! There are many people who believe they are allergic to cats. What most people don’t realize is that what they mistake for allergies to cats is actually an allergic reaction to cat urine. If you have cats, you have urine floating in the air in your home. With the proper air purifier you can effectively eliminate that suspended cat urine and lead a healthier lifestyle breathing pure fresh air. The way it works is really quite simple. You purchase one of the electronic purifiers, perform a few purification processes in your home or office, place the purifier in a strategic location, then forget about it. Before you realize it, the cat urine odor has disappeared and you are breathing healthy again!

Keep in mind this purifier works on the air only. It does not eliminate cat urine in carpets or fabrics. Cat urine odor in some fabrics has been known to be eliminated by focusing the air purifier on the area of cat urine saturation. It is not commonly effective for fabrics or carpets, however. There are other odorous situations that can be resolved by one of these electronic wonders. How would you like to eliminate the odor of the onion? Would you like to remove the onion smell from your hands? What about taking fish odors off your hands? I have eliminated spilled gas odors from both my hands and pants with this electronic purifier. You can also eliminate cooking odors by focusing the air purifier on the kitchen or cooking area.

An air purifier is not the same as an air filter. Air purifiers actually destroy the particulate that cause the smell where as an air filter traps particulate floating in a circulatory pattern created by the air filter fan.. This is why an air purifier is much more effective and desired over an air filter. The air purifier attacks the particulate everywhere, not just in the air circulatory pattern found when using air filters. A good air purifier will use a combination of ionization, ozone creation, and catalytic reactive coatings utilizing U.V. Utilizing this technology has made my home seem like there are no cats. I have seen other homes completely cleared of the "cat smell" with this simple but technological method of air purification. Simply plug it in and you are in business!

Toilet Training A Cat

Posted in General by admin on the February 14th, 2010

The best cat urine odor removal recipe is to train your cat to use a litter box. Here are some useful tips on how to easy toilet train your cat.

Toilet Training A Cat

Toilet training your cat is an easier task than you might think. Several techniques can be used for training your cat to use the toilet, and you can even buy products that will assist you in toilet training a cat.

The advantages of cat toilet training:

Teaching your cat to use the toilet can hold several advantages for any cat owner. The biggest advantage of having your cat use a toilet is that eliminates most of the disadvantages that using cat litter holds. Cat litter is expensive. After toilet training your cat, you won’t ever need to buy cat litter again. Cat litter boxes needs to be cleaned regularly or they will become smelly. With cat toilet training, the water in the toilet masks most of the offending smell and all you need to do is flush regularly – much simpler and easier than cleaning a litter box. Going away for weekends or holidays also becomes easier for your neighbor – instead of asking someone to clean out the litter box, all they need to do is flush your toilet once in a while (when they come around to water your plants and feed your cat).

How to toilet train a cat (do it yourself):

Toilet training your cat depends entirely on the cat’s personality. Toilet training sociable cats that love being praised make the training task much easier. You might want to adapt the toilet training technique described below to fit your cat’s personality. Training your cat to use the toilet can take anything between 2 weeks up to 3 months, depending on the individual cat’s personality. Meanwhile you can find natural remedies for cat urine stains until you finish the training.

Cat toilet training basically consists of a simple procedure: gradually moving your cat’s litter box closer and closer to the toilet, finally placing a bowl with cat litter inside the toilet, and removing it altogether when your cat is comfortable and used to it. Toilet training a cat is a gradual, step-by-step process, consisting of making small changes to the location of the litter box and only continuing to the next step when your cat is entirely comfortable with its current situation. You might have to wait anything between 2 days or 3 weeks before moving on a next step in cat toilet training. You might even have to go back a step once or twice when it turns out that your cat wasn’t ready to move on to the next toilet training step. Beware – cat toilet training takes a lot of patience!

Cat toilet training steps:

1. Start gradually moving your cat’s litter box nearer to the toilet until finally it should be next to the toilet. Ensure that your cat is always comfortable and sure of its litter box’s location.

2. Now start elevating the cat’s litter box. Put something non-slippery like newspapers or cardboard underneath the litter box. A normal rate to increase the height of the litter box would be about 5cm a day, but be very attentive to signs that your cat is not comfortable with the current height, and adjust the pace of raising the litter box accordingly. The cat litter box should be raised until it is at a level height with the toilet bowl. Throughout this process it is very important to keep the toilet lid open and the seat down, because your cat will get used to it and might even start climbing on the toilet seat in order to reach its litter box.

3. Move the litter box to rest on the open toilet seat. Keep it there until your cat seems comfortable with this arrangement.

4. Buy a metal bowl or tray that will fit snugly inside the toilet bowl. It would be advisable for the metal bowl to have small draining holes. Fill the bowl with cat litter (preferably the flushable type). Now remove your cat’s litter box entirely. If you have reached this step successfully you are very close to having a toilet trained cat!

5. While your cat is using the metal bowl inside the toilet, be attentive to where its paws are. The goal is teaching him to squat with all four paws on the toilet seat rim. You can move the cat while it is using the toilet and praise it (or reward it) when it is sitting in the correct position. Normally the cat will first sit entirely inside the metal bowl, then with front paws on the toilet seat, and finally it should sit with all four paws on the toilet.

6. Start using less and less cat litter. This can get smelly, so be sure to clean the bowl after every time your cat uses it. Cats scratch in sand or cat litter to cover up the smell (this is out of instinct), so if the bowl becomes too smelly your cat won’t be comfortable using it (and you probably wouldn’t be comfortable with using your toilet either). Using flushable cat litter makes cleaning the bowl very easy – just throw out the contents in the toilet and flush down, rinse out the bowl, refill with correct amount of cat litter and replace. A handy tip is to place newspaper on the floor around the toilet to help keep the room clean should your cat scratch in the cat litter. Decrease the amount of cat litter in a pace that your cat feels comfortable with.

7. When you basically don’t use any cat litter inside the bowl anymore, start gradually filling the bowl with water. The water will also help mask the smell so your cat will be more comfortable using the toilet. Be attentive to your cat’s behavior through this whole process – if your cat stops using the bowl inside the toilet, you may be moving on too fast and might need to go back a couple of steps.

8. When the water level in the bowl has reached about 4cm and your cat has no problem using it, it is time to remove the bowl entirely. Your cat should now be toilet trained. Remember to always leave the toilet seat up and flush regularly!

Products to assist you in toilet training your cat:

There are several cat toilet training kits available on the market. They basically consist of a tray that fits inside the toilet, and with a hole in the middle that you can gradually make bigger. When choosing a cat toilet training kit, ensure that you buy quality. The cat training kit should not be flimsy and should be able to support your cat’s weight even when the hole becomes large. Be aware of cheap, flimsy products you buy at toy stores or pet stores, because if your cat falls in, it might loose interest in toilet training completely.

The disadvantages in toilet training your cat:

Not everyone agrees that cat toilet training is such a great idea. They argue that it is unnatural for a cat to use a toilet, as it goes against their natural instincts to cover up their smell. Toilet seats can also be slippery and there might be the risk of your cat injuring itself. Even if your cat doesn’t fall in at all, he may become anxious whenever he uses the toilet and going to the toilet can become an unpleasant task.

A litter box also has the health benefit in that it’s easier to monitor your cat’s urine for signs of infections or sickness.

Moving locations will also be harder for the cat, because a litter box can be moved easily but the cat will first need to get used to using the new toilet. With some cats this is no problem and they can become comfortable with the new toilet very fast, while other cats might be less adaptable.

Things to remember when toilet training a cat:

The most important thing to remember is that the toilet training should be done gradually. Be very patient and never rush to the next step until you are sure that you cat is completely comfortable with the current setup.

Make using the toilet as easy as you can for the cat. Always remember to keep the toilet seat up and the bathroom door open. When you have guests, ensure that they also know about considering your cat. Flush the toilet regularly as cats do not like using smelly toilets.

Natural Remedies For Cat Urine Stains

Posted in General by admin on the February 13th, 2010

If you are a cat owner then you probably already faced a problem of cat urinating on your furniture or carpet. There are many cat urine stain and cat urine odor removal products available.

Natural Remedies For Cat Urine Stains

There are many cat urine prevention tips to prevent cat stains and odor and the wise pet owner will search out information on good house-breaking and litter-training techniques. The diet and health of your cat or dog are also a strong part of the equation. Responsible pet owners are those who are willing to visit and consult with a veterinarian on a regular basis to ensure they are taking the necessary steps to maintain the health of their pets.

When accidents happen, it is important to remove as much of the solid matter as possible. A large metal spatula without holes set aside for only this purpose is an invaluable and inexpensive removal tool. Make sure to label the spatula for pet use only so that it doesn’t find itself in the general population of your kitchen utensils! For vomit and feces, the spatula is effective in scraping the solid matter off in an efficient way. Make sure to have a plastic garbage bag handy to dump the mess into. This method works well even for watery messes and can prevent a lot of matter from soaking into carpeting or rugs.

The next step in pet stain removal is to try to absorb or suction up the liquid matter left over from messier feces or vomit and from urination accidents. To effectively absorb liquid from carpeting or rugs, the best method is to use an old towel or several thicknesses of paper toweling or toilet paper. Layering a plastic bag over the towels or toilet paper protects your hand or foot from becoming soiled when pressing the area to wick up the liquid. It is recommended that fresh towels or toilet paper be applied again and pressed into the spot until the majority of the liquid has been absorbed. The other method of liquid removal is to literally suck it up with a wet-dry vacuum cleaner or a carpet extractor/carpet cleaner.

When as much solid and liquid matter as possible has been removed, the process of cleaning and deodorizing the pet stain can begin. There are many home remedies touted by people and some work better than others. Baking soda is useful to some extent, but is easily overpowered by most pet stains and odors. The white residue left behind can be permanent and harder itself to remove, especially on colored carpeting and rugs. Vinegar is a known deodorizer as well, but the acidic nature of it can intensify when it mixes with urine stains, making the original smell even worse. Other home concoctions can include things like hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and bleach which wreak havoc on carpeting and can leave many surfaces discolored and faded. Some of these combination’s are also toxic and can be dangerous to both people and pets if used indiscriminately.

The best natural remedy for pet stains and spots are enzymes that are applied to the stain and allowed to digest the organic material that is the result of cat or dog accidents. These can take up to 24 hours to work and may need to be reapplied, but the results are worth it. The enzyme based products work by actually removing the root of the problem rather than just masking over it. Enzyme products are also very safe for humans and pets and are recommended in homes with children. The scent of enzyme products are also more desirable than other natural remedies and don’t have the chemical smell that commercial solutions posses.

Cat Urine Prevention Tips

Posted in General by admin on the February 12th, 2010

If you ow a cat then you probably faced urinating problem. Cat urine has a distinctive sharp smell that is tough to get rid of even with the best cat urine odor removal products. The best solution to avoid this problem is to train your cat to use litter box.

Cat Urine Prevention Tips

The litter box is the first thing you should check. It should be in a quiet, private area of the house. Many people put them in their basements and leave the door open a little as this not only creates a private environment but also keeps odors to a minimum in the rest of the house.

Some use a closet but if you do this be sure and keep the box clean to reduce odors in such a confined space and don’t forget to leave the door open!

Another placement possibility is under a table. Many people find a place without carpeting is best from a maintenance point of view as tile or cement is a lot easier to clean.

Ask yourself if you changed the litter box in any way: Has the box been moved to a high traffic area recently? Does the box need cleaning? Is a new litter being used or does it have too heavy a scent (clumping and unscented is best). Has the depth of the litter in the box changed? Some cats like their litter deep, others shallow. Your cat has outgrown the box and needs a larger one. The box is too hard to enter and exit. This can be an issue for older cats.

Do not put food and water near the litter box. Cats like these two areas kept separate (don’t you?).

If your cat has picked out a particular room to soil then find out how to clean cat urine and try closing the door to that room if you can or cover the target area with furniture.

Put a bowl of food over the target area as cats like to keep their eating area away from their ‘bathroom’.

Take your cat to the Vet on a regular basis.

If you have more than one cat get each one of them their own litter box.

Have you recently moved? A cat might smell an area where the previous owner’s cat urinated.

Let the cat alone while it goes so it can have some privacy.

If it is a new cat in your home it could take from three to eight weeks to get adjusted to the new environment. Be patient!

Was there a recent addition or loss to the family? A new baby, spouse? This is usually temporary until the cat adjusts to the change in their environment.

A change in your schedule can throw off your cat’s schedule as well and cause problems. Try and phase in major lifestyle changes gradually.

NEVER EVER punish the cat by kicking, hitting, chasing, screaming or rubbing their nose in their urine (remember the smell doesn’t bother them). Cats cannot make the cause and effect connection like we can so punishment after the fact is useless and will only make matters worse.

Cats are naturally very clean animals and they know where they are going. It is important to remember this and try and help your cat overcome any stress or anxiety they might be having in a caring and loving manner.

How To Clean Cat Urine

Posted in General by admin on the February 11th, 2010

There are different products available to clean cat urine stains as well as different cat urine odor removal products to neutralize smell.

How To Clean Cat Urine

When cat urine seeps through carpet, into padding and down to the floor beneath, it can give your home an unpleasant aroma (to say the very least!). In almost all cases, cat urine is the worst perpetrator of pet stains and pet odors. If you own a cat, it’s important for you to know how to clean cat urine stains.

The color of cat urine and its staining potential will often depend on dietary habits, age and sex of the cat, whether the cat is on medication, and the health of the cat. Urine can saturate absorbent materials such as carpet and padding, upholstery and mattresses well beyond the surface area that can effectively be cleaned. It is extremely difficult to remove all of the urine from inside of these materials. Even after a thorough cleaning, stains and odors often remain.

Tips on how to clean cat urine from the carpet:

Removing cat urine from your carpet can be one of the most difficult cleaning tasks, since it produce an especially persistent, unpleasant odor and amber-colored stains, so here are a few things you can do to eliminate them, when the ‘accident’ is happens.

First, blot up as much of the urine as possible with a soft, clean white cloth or absorbent paper towel. Press down firmly (do not rub) for 30 seconds. The more fresh urine you can remove before it dries, the simpler it will be to remove the odor. Remove the towel and repeat the process until the area is fully dried. Rinse the "accident zone" thoroughly with clean, cool water. After rinsing, remove as much of the water as possible by blotting it up. Next, you have some options on how to clean cat urine from the carpet:

1. Baking soda works well to eliminate surface (but not deeply penetrated) odors. Dampen the area with clean water and then sprinkle baking soda over it. Rub the baking soda into the soiled area and let dry. Brush or vacuum to remove the dry material.

2. Another option in the how to clean cat urine list is white vinegar. Mix together 1 quart warm water and 1/2 cup white vinegar, and dribble the mixture onto stain. Place dry towels over the stained area and put something heavy over the towels to increase the pressure. After some hours remove the towels and raise the nap of the carpet with a soft-bristled hairbrush. Note: Test the vinegar solution on a piece of fabric that is hidden from view – under the cushion or on the backside of the furniture.

3. To clean old or heavy stains in carpeting, consider renting an extractor or wet-vac from a local hardware store. The extracting/wet-vac machines works like a vacuum cleaner and do the best job of forcing clean water through your carpet and then forcing the dirty water back out again. When you use these machines, you should follow the instructions carefully. Note: Don’t use any chemicals with these machines – they work much more effectively with plain water.

4. One of the newest technologies for cleaning cat urine is penetrate the soiled area and deactivate the odor with peroxide or detergents. Simply spray a product that consist a 3% hydrogen peroxide and wait about five minutes. After that use a clean white absorbent cloth, blot the area, pressing down firmly (do not rub) for 30 seconds. Repeat this blotting process until the area is dry. If the stain or odor persists, repeat the process.Once the soiled area is really clean, you should use a high-quality pet odor neutralizer. Test the affected surface for staining first, and read and follow the instructions.

If the area still looks stained after it’s completely dry from extracting and neutralizing, apply a specialized stain and odor removing bacteria/enzyme cleaner, such as "Outright Pet Stain Eliminator," "Pet ‘Oops’ Remover," or "Stain Gobbler". Check out the online merchants and catalogers selling pet supplies.

Tips on how to clean cat urine from your upholstery:

When it is not possible to remove the cover of your couch or chair upholstery, observe the following cleaning procedures to get the cat urine out:

Dab stubborn stains with a soft, clean white cloth or absorbent paper towel. If solvents are required, avoid applying them directly onto the stain, and pour it onto a clean cloth. Clean the stain using a circular motion working from the outside inwards. After removing the stain, dry immediately with a hand held hairdryer using a cool setting. Take care to direct the air stream first towards the outside of the area working inwards. Always be careful to rub any stains gently and to use a brush with soft bristles.

Tips to clean cat urine from hardwood floors:

Remove any excrement and blot the entire wet area immediately and firmly with paper towels. Wash affected area several times with white vinegar. Rinse stain thoroughly with warm water. Blot dry with paper towels. Apply a specialized stain and odor-removing bacteria or enzyme cleaner (see above). Tip: Read the instructions carefully before using these products and test them in an invisible area. If you can not remove some old stains, try sanding away the stain and resealing the wood.

You must be extra vigilant about cat odor and attack the problems as soon as it occurs. Also you should remove all traces of the odor, because if the scent remains, the cat will do it again in the same spot.

Cat Litter Training

Posted in General by admin on the February 10th, 2010

No matter how many cat urine odor removal products i used to get the urine smell out of my carpet it still stinks. The best way to avoid the stains and smell is to train your cat to use litter box. Here are some tips on how to properly housebreak your cat.

Cat Litter Training

There are chapters in books and articles on the internet that are devoted to how to litter-train and the new cat owner is smart to seek them out in order to prevent costly problems down the road. Even more experienced cat owners are advised to buff up on their knowledge as veterinarians and animal behaviorists are continuing to learn more about cat urination issues and are passing on this information to the general public.

The first thing to start with is to maintain the health of your cat with a healthy diet, plenty of fresh water and regular veterinary check-ups. If your kitten or adult cat is healthy, litter-training should be relatively easy and come naturally to your pet. Why cat urine smells so bad? Cats are prone to urinary tract infections if they have a poor diet and limited access to fresh water. A balanced diet with both dry and canned wet food and water that is changed daily are things that are essential to the health of your pet.

The next thing to provide is an environment that is nurturing to your cat. Cats are playful animals and born hunters. Games and play that stimulate your cat are important to its mental health and keep a cat from becoming overweight, bored and unhealthy. Cats that are overweight are also more prone to diseases that can lead to urination problems. Something as simple as playing fetch with a crumpled up piece of foil or paper and playing chase with a string can be loads of fun for your cat. Consider getting a friend for your cat if your time and space allow for it. After an initial phase of minor quarreling, many cats welcome a feline friend and will play together well, providing stimulation that can stave off boredom and other problems.

The most important part of litter-training is the cat box itself. Available in many different sizes, it is essential to get a litter box large enough for your cat. It is also recommended to get one litter box per cat plus an extra one. If you have two cats, there should be a minimum of three boxes and so on. The type of litter you purchase is a personal decision and there are many choices from clay to material that clumps when wet. Don’t forget that your cat may have a preference that differs from yours too. It is worth trying a few different products if your cat doesn’t seem keen about your first choice. Cats also tend to prefer litters that don’t have heavy perfumes, so you may need to examine your options at the store until you find what works for both of you. Finally, make sure that the litter box is kept clean. Feces should be removed daily and the litter should be changed weekly at the very least. Litter-box odor can be kept to a minimum by following these simple steps, even without scented litter.

Cats scratch as a natural part of their urination and defecation ritual. They scratch to clear a spot initially and they scratch matter over the soiled area to cover it. When a kitten is young, it is important to keep showing them the proper place to relieve themselves and in time they will get the hang of it. When a kitten is weaned and is old enough, begin by placing them in the litter box periodically throughout the day. By gently taking a paw, help your kitten scratch in the litter to trigger its natural instinct to scratch.

If you are lucky enough to catch a kitten in the middle of an accident, try to pick it up and place it in the litter box to finish the job. If an accident does occur, place the feces or soaked up urine in the litter box and then place your kitten in the box so that it can associate the two together. Always praise your kitten for using the litter box and make it a good experience that your pet will want to recreate. Remember, prevention is the key to reducing many of the problems associated with cat urine stains and odor.

Why Cat Urine Smells So Bad

Posted in General by admin on the February 9th, 2010

Among all the pets cat urine has the strongest, distinctive smell. The odor is so strong that it is very hard to get rid of, especially from carpets, sofas and mattresses.

Why Cat Urine Smells So Bad

Many people wonder why cat urine odor is so hard to get rid of. This article talks a little bit about the composition of cat urine.

Cat urine is composed of five different bacteria strains. Two of the bacteria strains are associated with the cat’s marking scent. The other strains are in the cat spray, urine, and uric acid.

The sticky, tacky part of cat urine is urea. Urochrome is the pigment, and then there are the uric acid crystals and salts.

The first two components are not difficult to clean. The uric acid with its crystals and salts are what we continually see and smell, long after we’ve tried to clean the cat urine spot.

The crystals are insoluble, and they bond tightly to any surface they land on. This is why cat urine is immune to common household cleaners. Any type of moisture that gets on the crystals reactivates them. This is why we smell cat urine odor more distinctly when the weather is very humid.

The only way to completely and permanently clean up cat urine odor from any surface in your home is to use an enzyme cleaner. These cleaners are special formulas that actually eat the bacteria and crystals in cat urine.

Common household cleaners don’t contain enzymes. If they do, the enzymes are probably specific to cleaning up blood. Pet odor and stain removers use enzymes that attack and get rid of urine bacteria.

The worst type of cleaner you can use on cat urine odor puddles is any ammonia cleaner! Cat urine contains ammonia. Pour one of these cleaners onto that puddle, and its calling kitty’s name to come over and mark the spot again!

Now you know more about cat urine and its’ odor than you probably wanted. However, if you or someone you know has a cat urine odor problem, this is why it’s so difficult to get rid of.

How To Remove Cat Urine Odor

As much as i tried to keep my home clean, i just couldn’t get rid of cat urine odor on my carpet. No matter which cat urine odor removal product i used the smell staid there.

How To Remove Cat Urine Odor

After using several well-advertised and expensive cat urine odor removal products that
didn’t work, I was searching on the web for a solution and found a homemade
remedy that uses three simple household products. Desperate I tried it and
wouldn’t you know it – it worked!

So well that I had to find out why and researched the chemistry and origins of the
recipe. I found out it was developed originally by a chemist for neutralizing the
proteins in skunk odor, which are the same proteins found in cat urine and give it
it’s horrible smell!

Cat urine is not much different from any other urine, be it human or other animals.
It is made up urea, creatinine, uric acid, sodium and other electrolytes. When cat
urine dries the urea gets broken down by bacteria which gives it that distinctive
ammonia smell. As it decomposes further it releases thiols which make the cat
urine odor worse yet.

How to deal with cat urine smell? The recipe works because the reaction of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda
produces large amount of oxygen. The oxygen molecules bond to the thiols,
breaking them up into carbon dioxide and ammonia, that evaporates quickly
thereby effectively neutralizing the thoils and their foul-smelling odor.

THE RECIPE

  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon of liquid soap

Gently mix all ingredients in a non-metal container. Do not mix or shake
vigorously!

The mixture is best used when fresh but can be stored. Do not keep mixture in an
airtight container as baking soda and hydrogen peroxide when mixed together
release loads of oxygen. We don’t want an explosion on our hands on top of the
mess we already have!

I mix and keep mine in a large spray bottle I bought from Home Depot but on old
plastic liter soda bottle works just a well. Just remember to keep the cap on
loose.

3% hydrogen peroxide can be bought at most grocery and drug stores in pint
and quart bottles.

A word of caution:

Surfaces that are porous may swell e.g. drywall, wood flooring, particle board,
etc. with application of this recipe. But if your surface is already ruined by cat
urine and you want to get rid of the odor until you can replace it – give it a try.

Always test for color-fastness when using first. Apply to a small area and wait
24-48 hours until dry before using on an entire area. Hydrogen peroxide is a
bleaching agent in stronger concentrations (think teeth whiteners) and can lighten
materials that are not color-fast.
